What is Anodizing?

Anodizing (Electrolytic oxidation of aluminum) is an electrochemical process for surface finishing of aluminum. During the process, the aluminum is immersed in an electrolyte bath and deliberately oxidized by electric current. This forms a controlled aluminum oxide layer that is significantly harder and more resistant than the material's natural oxide layer.

Afterwards, the surface can be sealed, colored, or functionally optimized depending on requirements. The formed oxide layer is firmly bonded to the base material and cannot flake off or detach.

Production of the anodized layer

Preparation

Before the actual Anodizing, all Aluminum components are thoroughly cleaned (degreasing, pickling, neutralizing, rinsing) – only a clean surface enables a uniform oxide layer.

Electrochemical oxidation

The Aluminum parts are immersed in an acid bath and connected as the anode. By applying electric current, the desired oxide layer is formed in varying thicknesses in a controlled manner.

Coloring (optional)

Before sealing, the porous oxide layer can be colored – typical colors are black, silver, bronze, blue, red and gold; custom shades are also sometimes possible.

Sealing

In the final step, the pores of the oxide layer are closed. This improves corrosion protection, cleanability, resistance and service life.

Anodizing is suitable exclusively for Aluminum and aluminum alloys. Particularly commonly used are: EN AW-6060, EN AW-6063, EN AW-6082, EN AW-5754. The choice of the alloy influences color, surface quality and layer formation.

Colors and surfaces in Anodizing

The natural anodized layer has a silvery to slightly matte appearance. By coloring, numerous color variants can be achieved: Natural anodized, Black anodized, Bronze, Gold, titanium colors, special colors. Depending on pretreatment, matte, brushed, satin or glossy surfaces are produced.

In Anodizing the protective layer is formed directly from the Aluminum and is firmly bonded to the material. With Powder coating, on the other hand, an additional coating is applied to the surface.
